Harvesting Haskaps and experimenting with some bird protection

Grand Forks Haskaps

A mechanical harvester was not used given the small acreage but instead for this first season of significant berry  growth a combination of hand picking and a collector with hand shaking was used.

The bushes during 2019 average about 36 to 48 inches tall which is very encouraging considering that they were less than three seasons old.

Bird damage can be a challenge so we experiment with 200 feet of netting.  Although it did help, we were pleasantly surprised as to how many berries from the non-protected areas were hand picked after the birds had moved on.

The harvesting season began in early June and is typically completed by the 15th.  This year we harvested until July 1st as additional berries ripened.
